DIY Stargate looks awesome

June 16, 2010 Gadget No Comments

Are you a huge fan of the Stargate sci-fi series? Apparently, this dad is, which is why he decided to spend some quality time with his son to build up a replica Stargate using nothing but their hands and a whole lot of heart from scratch. There were no blueprints to refer to – only one’s imagination, and the materials required included wood, coat hangers, tubing and styrofoam. To make it all the more realistic, the gate will actually spin through and through, although it won’t transport you to a distant galaxy or universe, while there is absolutely no chance of hostiles coming through your way either.

Watch an Interview With the World’s First Cyborg

August 12, 2010 Gadget No Comments

Twelve years ago, Professor Kevin Warwick became the world’s first cyborg. Today, at Motherboard he’s holding court on cybernetics, and how if we don’t embrace our cyber upgrade potential, the robots will someday win.

Warwick knows what he’s talking about, not just as the first man to have an RFID implant—letting him turn on lights by snapping his fingers, among other things—but as a Professor of Cybernetics at Reading University. His vision of the future is more of a warning, really; that “someday we’ll switch on that machine, and we won’t be able to switch it off.” We’re in an arms race with machines, so why not upgrade where we can?

It’s fascinating stuff, if a little alarmist. But please don’t tell Dr. Warwick I said that, lest he blast me with the optical laser guns I’m sure he’s equipped himself with.

Trashlight isn’t trashy

June 9, 2010 Gadget No Comments

This is the most classy trash themed light that you could ever possibly own. Sure, trash is a dirty thing, but you can pretty it up with this little gadget. With this you’ll never again have to dump out your trash in the dark since the lamp is directly attached to the can itself. Sure, it could make putting trash bags into the can a little tricky, but at least you’ll be able to see what you’re doing.

Another added bonus is that you won’t have to go far to throw out your burned out light bulb when the lamp stops shining brightly. The trash is actually a concept design made for a show based around “Uncomfortable Conversations”. The idea is that not even your trash can be a secret with this can. It’ll be on display for every single person that enters your home. After all, your garbage can tells a whole lot about you. There’s no word on if this design by Craighton Berman will ever make it to a purchasable stage.

Toshiba Libretto W100 Dual-Screen Tablet Now Officially For Sale

I’m still not sure exactly what to make of the Libretto W100, Toshiba’s dual-screen Windows 7 tablet. But if you’re the curious type, you can buy one now for $1,100.

That price still seems a little steep, given the specs—-1.2 GHz Pentium U5400 processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 62GB SSD, a USB port and a microSD slot—and the unclear use cases. But there’s no questioning that it’s one unique little gadget.

The W100 is a limited release for now, and you’re looking at a two to three week wait from order to delivery. Plenty of time to figure out what you’re going to use it for.
